What is The Peregrine?

The official bird of Chicago, the peregrine falcon perches atop gargoyles and keeps watch over our city's skyline. Not only has it merged its fast-paced (200mph) lifestyle with ours, but the peregrine thrives here. It is beloved.

When we think about the environmental humanities, the symbolic oomph of the peregrine supplies us with an aspirational model. How can we adapt to the natural world's needs as the peregrine has adapted to ours? Considering the peregrine's life in Chicago, we engage in conversations of urbanization, of stewardship, and of observation.

This project is founded on just such values. In the pages of The Peregrine, the University of Chicago's undergraduate publication for scholarship in the environmental humanities, you will find our brightest minds looking at the world from a bird's eye view, identifying problems as they form, and flying toward solutions at top speed.
